"From 1793, when the first Buncombe County Court of Pleas in General Session met on the square, this place has been the heart and soul of the city. Here the county built six different courthouses before philanthropist George Pack offered land on College Street for a seventh court house. What he wanted in exchange was for the square to become a public park. From 1892 to 1926 the Asheville City Hall framed the east end of the square.
In 1928 the present Buncombe County Courthouse and Asheville City Building were opened to the public, and the creation of City-County Plaza expanded the green space in the city’s center. The contrasting styles of classic Federal and Art Deco in the government buildings exemplify the architectural richness to be found throughout Asheville."
